The name of this blog is from a haiku by Matsuo Basho: “The moon and sun are eternal travellers. Even the years wander on. A lifetime adrift in a boat, or in old age leading a tired horse into the years, every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.”
Its apt for a blog describing the upcoming tour with Björk around the world.
I found the haiku in a thriller I’m currently reading, Death Match by Lincoln Child. Never mind what it is about, nothing relaxes me like a good thriller. And after our first concert together in Laugardalshöllin last Monday, I really need to relax.
I am a classical pianist and this was the very time first time I play in a rock concert. Nothing could have prepared me for the mad reaction of the public. I guess the concert went well - people were screaming and security guards had to keep the front line in check.
I am not complaining! I am just not used to this. In my world, concert goers applaud politely. If they really like what you are doing, they give you a standing ovation. The craze Björk’s music seems to evoke took me completely by surprise.
I went home right afterwards. Lay in my sofa and stared at the wall for two hours. I felt like I had just lost my virginity. And this time it was for real!

it sounds lovely!
my friends & i will be at the United Palace show in nyc.
i agree that the journey is home…the joy & satisfaction are in the process, not neccessarily the results.
i hope you enjoy the tour!

I agree … here’s an excerpt from my journal I keep while traveling as a team manager for the Burton women’s snowboard team… It is a similar lifestyle to traveling with a band! Except playing music is probably a little kinder on the body!
Flying / moments of contemplation, no expectation. Wondering about the world that will greet you on the other side. Sleep deprivation from the previous night. Now taking flight. Into the world of possibilities. I understand how travel can become an obsession. So many places to see and be. Free. “The Journey is the Destination” as my favorite saying goes. A traveler, never a tourist. My body is my home.
