I have just come back to my hotel after a very successful concert on the square in front of the Sydney Opera House. It was fabulous! The Moon was full - and bats hovered above us. I have never seen live bats before, except once in the London Zoo. Seeing them in their natural habitat was very different.

The audience was great and the good vibes were powerful. And the weather was perfect. How different from the festivals! Here, people were really enjoying the music. It was marvellous to take part in it.

Joanna Newsom was in the party afterwards. I was really taken by her music in Red Rock, Denver last spring. Would love to hear her CDs some day.

Joanna Newsom is amazing and by the way great to hear from you again Jónas I hope you have a wonderful 2008! I say for Ms. Newsom the best place is to start at her debut The Milk-Eyed Mender but I’m sure itunes has her whole work. Bats are pretty cool to but can become a bit of a pain if they inhabit a place in which people live. My parents had some living in their garage and the state government had to get involved because they were a protected species. I hope everything on tour is going smoothly.

    :D

We have bats out here around Buffalo, especially if you live near a pond, which I do (and woods). If one ever flew inside my house, I would just have a heart attack. When I sit outside in the summer as the sun sets, they’ll start to come out. You at first think it’s a bird. Then you realize it’s too dark for birds.

Jonas! Brilliant performance at the Opera house. I was honoured to be there. It was such a incredible high, everyone was so beautifully happy afterwards.

I loved your version of “Cover Me”. You really took that piece to a wonderful place.

I look forward to seeing you in Adelaide.

I would like to come to one of your parties! I am a student studying composition at the local conservatorium, and I would like to chat to you.

Have a beautiful time in Australia, you and the others are welcomed with open arms!

i am really impressed with that Joanna Newsom…she reminds me of a cross of Shirley Collins & Melanie Safka (with a little bit of Yoko Ono/Kristin Hersh) but still totally her own thing.

its rare for new artists to interest me, because i always seem to be going further & further back in time in what speaks to me.

bats like to live around water because they eat mosquitoes!

Sometime around 1990 I was at a Beethoven recital with Ashkenazy at the Pompeii Amphitheatre. As he sat down and played the first notes, a small bat came and started flying in a small orbit around his head and making loud clicking noises and continued to do so for the remainder of the performance, which was somewhat close to an hour.

They don’t eat enough mosquitos. I need more bats.
